Our Canadian client, Ethan Miller, owns a remote cabin located next to a creek, with abundant water resources. The cabin sits at a lower elevation, with a vertical lift of approximately 25–30 feet (≈7.5–9 meters) from the creek to the cabin. 

The client wanted a reliable water supply for the cabin and garden while remaining completely off-grid, powered by solar panels and a LiFePO₄ battery system, with the battery providing power during cloudy or low-sun days, without relying on mains electricity.

For Ethan’s off‑grid water supply solution, he chose the 1 Inch 48 V 0.7 HP Solar Surface Centrifugal Pump (SKU: FLW-SQB2.1-50-D48-500) — a solar powered centrifugal pump specifically designed for remote garden irrigation and water transfer, providing reliable off-grid water supply without the need for AC power.

This solar powered water pump features a 48 V DC, 0.7 HP (≈500 W) brushless motor with MPPT and 32‑bit intelligent control, ensuring smooth and high‑efficiency operation with solar panels even under variable sunlight conditions. The pump has a rated voltage of 48 V DC, with a wide operating range of 32–100 V DC, allowing it to be easily connected to a 48 V battery system for reliable off-grid operation.

As shown in the diagram, Ethan’s solar water pump system integrates the pump, solar panels, and a LiFePO₄ battery through the control box. The LiFePO₄ battery voltage is selected to match the pump’s rated DC voltage. In this model, a 48 V DC pump is paired with a 48 V DC LiFePO₄ battery system to ensure correct voltage compatibility.

The pump draws power directly from the solar panels when sunlight is sufficient. During cloudy or low-sun conditions, the LiFePO₄ battery can replace the solar power to provide energy.The control box has terminals for the solar panel or battery (P+ and P−), the pump (W, V, U), and a tank water level sensor. When the tank water level drops below the set point, the sensor signals the control box to start the pump and draw water from the source. When the tank reaches the target level, the control box stops the pump automatically.

With a rated power of approximately 0.7 HP (≈500 W), the pump typically draws around 10–12 A at 48 V DC during operation. The LiFePO₄ battery does not output a fixed current; instead, the pump draws the required current based on load, while the battery’s BMS manages current limits and protection. This configuration supports stable off-grid water supply for irrigation, cabin use, or livestock watering within the pump’s 32–100 V DC operating range.

 

Pump Operation and Irrigation Capacity

Based on the pump curve of the purchased centrifugal water pump, Ethan’s system delivers reliable water output for garden or small farm irrigation. The centrifugal pump can provide up to 2.1 m³/h at 0 m head and maintains sufficient pressure to lift water to heights up to 50 m under low-flow conditions.

For a customer’s garden irrigation, when the pump operates around 1–1.5 m³/h, it can supply 20–25 m of head, allowing water to reach elevated tanks or distribute evenly across the garden. The customer’s garden is approximately 60 m² in size, suitable for efficient watering with this pump using drip or sprinkler systems.
